There is no doubt about it, an energy efficient home is a cost effective one. One of the ways on how to save energy and make your home energy efficient is to design a new house properly and make use of the correct building materials. In the old houses in Australia and South Africa, bricks have long been chosen as building materials. Nearly 90% of all the houses in these places are constructed using bricks, and still are today. Nowadays, in an effort to improve the energy efficiency of homes and for ways on how to save energy, building regulations require the newly built houses to use the right materials. Here are some points you should know that will help you come up with an informed choice. As you are probably aware, most of the energy consumed in the home is used for cooling and heating purposes. Therefore, any effort that can reduce the cooling and heating requirements of your home will be a good one, right? But, do you think it is possible to reduce your cooling and heating energy consumption while keeping up the thermal comfort of your home? This is where passive home design plays an important role. In passive home design, the incoming energy from the sun is used to improve the house's cooling and heating characteristics in a natural way. Four major principles make up passive home design. These principals are orientation, ventilation, insulation and thermal mass. Orientation. Here is a simple example how orientation can affect your house's cooling and heating characteristics. If you live in the northern hemisphere, south facing windows would let the sun in during winter, assisting in heating your home. While during summer the sun is high in the sky, which will keep your house cooler as less surface of the window is exposed to sunlight. Ventilation. Cross ventilation is important. To facilitate cross ventilation, either side of the house should have sufficiently sized openings with almost no internal obstructions. This allows air to get in and out of the house in order to naturally cool it down. Insulation. Insulation in walls and ceilings acts as obstacles to heat conduction. The efficiency of insulation is characterised by the insulation material's R-value. But it is not only the R-value that one has to consider. The thermal mass is another important factor to keep in mind. Thermal Mass. Typically, dense and heavy materials, like bricks, convey heat better through the walls. However, due to their thermal mass, bricks can absorb much more energy. Temperature differences then become small and the heat absorption into the house during summer is significantly reduced. Lightweight materials, compared to brick walls, have very low thermal mass. It is because of this thermal mass that brick walls are much better at moderating your home's temperature. Now you understand why most houses built by the English back in the days where built from bricks. They understood the importance of thermal mass. Even if you go into one of these older houses today you will be amazed at how cool these actually are compared to the warm outside environment. But this is not just an old wives tale. There is a research that back up the theory that brick stone houses are energy efficient. Research has shown that a large part of the heat is reflected back to the external environment by the brick's exterior surface. Other studies concluded that in summertime, the temperature inside a house constructed from bricks remained comfortable and favourable even though outside temperature varied significantly. 1. Browse Better Homes and Gardens, HGTV: For timeless looks, consult the experts that have established themselves as knowledgeable interior design sources over decades. Libraries or online databases may carry prior issues of Better Homes and Gardens, and HGTV is constantly airing a TV show pertaining to home improvement or interior design. Also try perusing their websites for quick access to classic interior design ideas. 2. Search Google Images: Perhaps the easiest and most painless option for finding thousands of results is to conduct a simple search for "interior design ideas" in Google Images. A wide variety of results are quickly displayed, from the posh and extravagant to the fun and basic. 3. Narrow the Scope of Your Google Search: Now that you're faced with an endless array of options ranging from the generic to over-the-top, how many of these results actually match your vision or budget? Paring down your search will prevent you from having to sift through dozens of irrelevant ideas. You can limit your search by addressing the following details: • Budget: How much are you looking to spend? If you're a young adult with limited expendable income, consider searching for "dorm decorating ideas" for fresh and thrifty ideas (ever considered pipe-cleaner art or a Polaroid clothesline?). • Theme: Do you have a specific theme in mind? Even if it's something simple like a theme involving shapes, adding the world "rectangle" or "circle" to your search for designs will help you in your quest of finding pertinent results. • Color Scheme: Fascinated by blue hues or deep reds? Add it to your search. Remember, you don't have to adhere to any particular color scheme - if you think that the nice living room set in blue tones might look better in a golden brown, do it. It's your living space, and it's your call. • Room: This is fairly obvious, but amending your search to include the type of room you're decorating will help eradicate images of bedrooms when you're trying to get kitchen interior design ideas. 4. Pay Attention to Movies or TV: Keeping an eye on the hero character's bedroom may spark an interior design idea (provided the film is relevant and not related to Star Wars or the Lord of the Rings trilogy). All film crews have a Production Designer and an Art Director working on every set, and it is their responsibility to design and decorate every scene captured on film - and they are paid well for their expertise. The next time you watch a movie, take special note of how the room in the background looks, and consider it free interior decorator advice from the best in the business. 5. Flickr: Another less conventional approach to finding trendy interior design ideas is to log on to Flickr, a popular photo-sharing website. Here, you can browse photos Google Images may have missed, and you can search through photos by the tags given to them - and you will be surprised at the number of proud individuals who take pictures of their savvy new living room. Try typing in "Interior Decorating", "Feng Shui", or "Interior Design" for a myriad of unique ideas that you won't find on traditional home design websites. The Craftsman house plan has its origins in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late nineteenth century, which was a reaction against the mechanized, mass-produced psychology of the industrial revolution. In America it influenced architecture, landscape design, interior design, and the applied and decorative arts. In both architecture and the decorative arts, the Craftsman style has continued in numerous revivals, as well as restoration projects, to the present day. Its origins are British, but by the 1890's some of the most influential architects and designers in Boston began to adapt the British design reforms begun by William Morris. The first American Arts and Crafts Exhibition opened at Boston's Copley Hall in April 1897, with over a thousand objects fashioned by 160 craftsmen and craftswomen. Two months later, The Society of Arts and Crafts was founded to promote artistic works in all handicrafts, and to counteract "the desire for over ornamentation and specious originality." The movement was an early advocate of the "form follows function" ideal. In America the Arts and Crafts style embraced locally handcrafted metal, wood, and glass work to create objects which were elegant in their simplicity. In the field of architecture there was a reaction against both the opulence of Victorian architecture, and also the mass-produced housing style. The Arts and Crafts style was for sturdy structures with clean lines, made of natural materials. Craftsman style home plans were defined by their low pitched gable roofs with broad eaves; exposed wood structural elements, and large front porches. The typical Craftsman style house was built of wood and had one or one and a half stories. The distinguishing feature of the Craftsman style was its philosophy that was predicated upon a functional aesthetic; use of natural materials; and a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship which its proponents felt was missing from the ornate traditional styles of the nineteenth century. The Arts and Crafts designers and architects believed that by returning to a simpler and less pretentious style they could foster a healthier, more productive and more comfortable lifestyle. The Craftsman style bungalow adapted the practical floor plan and large porch typical of British colonial architecture in India. This style proved very popular, and the bungalow house plan was a favorite in building plan books and in pre-cut home kits of the early 20th century. While all Craftsman houses can be considered to be bungalows, not all bungalows are built in the Craftsman style, which is distinguished by excellent workmanship and many fine details. Typically, a Craftsman home has the following features: 1 or 1 1/2 stories tall; a large covered front porch with massive battered columns; a low-pitched roof with exposed rafters and deep eaves; dormers; double-hung windows with a single pane in the lower window and multiple lights in the upper window; decorative knee braces; built-in cabinetry; a large fireplace flanked with built-in cabinetry. Additionally, this style featured many fine details, such as hammered bronze or copper metalwork, and art tiles made by notable art potters such as the Roycrofters. The most important thing is considering the style of your house. Choosing appropriate color will be an additional accent for your house style.
