CHOOSING SUIT JACKET VENTS | SINGLE, DOUBLE OR NO VENT Visit http://imagedoc.com.au for men’s styling services Visit http://improvemant.com to improve as a man 1 – SINGLE VENT The single vent is common in American designed jackets and was originally created for men who rode horses so the two sides of the jacket would fall across the horses back and prevent the jacket from creasing. BENEFITS The key benefit of the single vent option is the freedom of movement that it offers. The single vent can look better for men with taller, leaner physiques and the placement of the single vent at the middle rear of the jacket is also favorable for men that carry a lot of weight or muscle in their rear such as guys with squatters butts. NEGATIVES The single vent often signifies a mass produced, off the rack suit jacket, blazer or sports coat which is potentially cheaper and lower quality. It requires more fabric and labor to create the double vented jacket, and is therefore cheaper for suit companies to manufacture single vented jackets in mass volumes. The other possible negative is that when you reach into your pockets, this will expose your bum to the people that are behind you (I will leave you to decide if this would be a positive or negative experience for those that encountered this view) A single vent suit jacket is most likely worn by a man who purchased an off the rack suit as they are the most common vent found on men’s suit. 2 – DOUBLE VENT The double vented jacket is common in British designed suit jackets, blazers and sports coats. Again, this was originally a functional addition for those riding horses and has been maintained for both aesthetics and functionality. As mentioned earlier, more fabric and labor is required to create double vents which means that most off the rack suits will not have double vents. You are more likely to see double vented jackets with custom made, made to measure and bespoke men’s suits or with more expensive off the rack suits. BENEFITS The benefits of the double vented jacket is that you won’t have the same crinkling and creasing issues when sitting on seats for extended periods or reaching into your pockets due to the vents placement on each side. Essentially the double vented option offers more functionality whilst still looking good on most body shapes. NEGATIVES The negatives of the double vent option is mainly the cost as they are often only available with custom, made to measure and bespoke suits or found on off the rack suits at more high end stores. For both those reasons, double vented jackets are harder to come by for most men. Another possible negative can be for those men who have a very large bum. In this case, there may be occasions when the large piece of fabric in the middle of each vent will catch or sit on your bum which may give the illusion that you have excess fabric in this area. 3 – NO VENT And finally the no vent option is common in Italian designed jackets which cater the leaner, more petite frames of many Italian men. BENEFITS One of the key benefits of the no vent option is that it can complement or highlight a trim and lean physique. If you have a V-shape body with the small waist and broader shoulders, the no vent jacket can work to highlight this aesthetic. When standing on your feet completely upright, a no vent jacket can look the most complimentary for a trim physique. NEGATIVES However the negatives of the no vent option is that it offers far less freedom of movement and can be more uncomfortable to wear. Two distinct issues with the no vent jacket is if you’re sitting in your jacket frequently and for extended periods as this will cause the fabric to crease. Also, if you are carrying a fair amount of body weight (particularly if you are short and carrying a fair amount of body weight) the no vent suit may not be very flattering for your physique. And if you carry a lot of weight or muscle in your butt or like to put your hands in your pockets frequently, a no vent jacket may be very uncomfortable due to the restricted movement and lead to creasing of the fabric. Generally a man will wear a no vent jacket because he was simply ignorant to having other choices, or he’s very fashion forward with a leaner physique and is happy to deal with the lack of functionality in order to gain the sleeker, more streamlined look.
